Welsh farmers have known for generations that if you look after the environment, the environment will look after you. And that's the secret behind centuries of sustainable farming practices that have made Wales a producer of high quality lamb and beef.
With high standards of animal husbandry and pasture land management, family run farms have helped preserve this unique landscape for generations. It's one of the reasons Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef have achieved the coveted and prestigious Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status from the European Commission.
The lambs, which are all born in Wales, are tagged and logged from birth so that they can be identified as belonging to a specific farm and traced at every stage of the production process. Only approved, regularly-inspected abattoirs can prepare the meat. Quality is at the heart of everything they do.
When you buy meat for you and your family you want to know where it came from. You want to know how it was reared and in what country it was produced. PGI Welsh Lamb and PGI Welsh Beef are produced to high standards of animal welfare.
We're proud to say that the love, care and attention our farmers lavish upon Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef has been recognised by the European Commission in the form of Protected Geographical Indication status. You can find more about this prestigious award here. But one particularly important benefit of PGI status is that it tells you exactly where your meat has come from.
Red meat authority Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) acts as guardian of the PGI Welsh Lamb and PGI Welsh Beef designations. We make sure our supply chain is living up to very high standards.
This means that every animal must be fully traceable from field to butcher's shop or supermarket.
